• These days, it seems like the World Series Of Poker, or WSOP, is everywhere.  The events are held in casinos across the United States and some events are even held overseas.  With all of the media hype, it’s no wonder that everyone wants to get in on the game, but to do that people need to understand how the World Series Of Poker actually works.  First, though, you need to understand how poker works, in general.

    Defining Poker:

First of all, it’s important to note that poker is actually a family of card games.  It’s not just Texas Holdem, as some people might think.   All poker games, which include Stud, Omaha and others, have very similar card and hand rankings, as well as betting systems.  That’s what makes them variations of poker.  So, understanding those basics can help you to understand a little bit about a wide variety of games.

Poker games also have many differences, though.  In some of them, like Holdem, the object is to have the best and.  In others, like Razz, the object is to have the worst hand.  In a third type, hi-lo games, both the best and worst hand split the hand winnings.  There are also other differences that make each poker game type unique.
