• The Winning Strategy in Poker

With regular broadcasts on television, texas holdem poker game is one of the most popular games in the world today. And with the amount of information and knowledge available about the game, it’s no wonder more and more people want a piece of the action as well. While you do know the rules and regulations, what strategy should you adopt that can help you win the pot?

    Know the winning hands…

Recognizing a winning hand depends on how much you know the winning order. For this, you need to check out some tutorials and learn the order so that they are fresh in your mind during play. While ace is the highest card, number cards rank the lowest with face cards forming the middle order.

A few winning hands are listed below in accordance with their order:

    1. Royal flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 (of the same suit)

    2. Straight flush: five consecutive cards of the same suit,

    3. Four of a kind: four aces, four kings etc.

    4. Full house: three cards of the same rank + two cards of the same rank

    5. Flush: five cards of the same suit but non-consecutive

    6. Straight: five consecutive cards but of different suits

    7. Three of a kind: of the same rank

    8. Two pairs: two pairs of cards with the same rank

    9. One pair and high card: could be any hand not already mentioned

    Think like your opponent…

Another important thing you must learn to do in poker is to think like your opponent. For this, you must observe him/her carefully to get an idea about the cards he/she holds. This gives you the power to manipulate them into playing cards they generally would not. Bluffing would require you to make your opponent fold his/her cards even if they have a better hand. On the other hand, you can slow-play and have your opponent increase his/her bets and add to the pot.

    Position is key…

Having the last position puts you at an advantage since you can see all your opponents make their moves and then figure out your course of action. Early position gives more control to your opponents as well as the chances of having a better hand. Being an integral part of poker strategy, you will have to spend a lot of time studying and practicing position to perfect your game.

    Wait and watch…

Observing your opponents is the only way to ‘tell’ what kind of hand they have. Look for visual clues that can help you decipher whether they are happy at having a good hand or desperate to make one. This can dictate your betting pattern.

    Practice a lot…

Only when you play poker again and again and again will you begin to fully comprehend its various little intricacies. Whether you play online or with your friends at home, make sure you get in as much practice as you can. This will ensure you don’t repeat mistakes.
